Milton H. Erickson was an outstanding hypnotist who had great success during the various problems people brought to him. He didn’t use conventional methods. Instead, he was very engaged in the client’s world model. This leads him to treat every client uniquely using permissive techniques and a lot of metaphors. His method for conducting hypnosis is widely known as “Ericksonian hypnosis,” and he is considered by many to be the father of permissive hypnosis techniques.
In their study of modeling excellence, Richard Bandler and John Grinder eventually were encouraged to study and model the techniques of Milton H. Erickson. This work was published in two volumes called “Patterns of the hypnotic techniques of Milton H. Erickson Vol. 1” and “Patterns of the hypnotic techniques of Milton H. Erickson Vol. 2”. These books are considered to be classics in the field of NLP. There is no doubt in my mind that Erickson’s exceptional change work is the reason that many NLP practitioners are also taught hypnosis and especially Ericksonian hypnosis.
Milton H. Erickson is, therefore, a man that has had a significant influence in both the field of hypnosis and NLP. If this is the first time you learn about Erickson, I will encourage you to seek out more information in the many books he has written and the many books about his person.
